“A PRIVATE VIEW” BY JULIA MARTINEZ at The Red Pegunin Art Gallery

Julia MartinezOn August 16th from 7-9, the Red Penguin Art Gallery is presenting Julia Martinez’s special series of photographs “A Private View” for the first time in Spain.

Julia Martinez is a British photographer, specialising in portraiture, including fine art nude work. Her interest in photography started out in childhood, with the best possible training, helping in the darkroom alongside her Grandfather, a professional photographer, where she was excited by the “magic” of the process, a response evident in her work.

Unusually her career has been on both sides of the lens. While working as a photographer’s assistant , she was invited in front of the lens, and worked both in advertising and as a model for fine art photographers, such as Rankin, Bob Carlos Clarke, Alwyn Coates, Ray Massey, Miguel Oriola (Madrid) and this background has been immensely helpful when it comes to building an empathic rapport with her subjects.

It was David Bailey’s work, particularly his photo-book “Trouble and Strife” that inspired her move behind the lens. She felt impelled to embark on the study that would allow her to create images of beauty from the other side of the camera. Since she has completed a degree in photography at the University of Gloucestershire in the UK, receiving generous sponsorship from Kodak and also won a Fuji nationwide photographic competition on the theme of “Obsessions” with her photographs of ballet dancers.

Like painters and photographers through the ages, Martinez had been inspired by the ethereal beauty of the female form and as a female photographer with her experience in front of the lens, she brings a welcome freshness to the genre of nude photography, collaborating with her models to produce images through a creative but also natural process.

Julia is collaborating with and supporting the Gateway Women’s Foundation. All the models in her photographs are either childless by circumstance or choice. She donates some of her profits to Gateway Women Charity Foundation to thank them for helping her to create a fulfilling life after infertility.
