This month I wanted to bring to your attention an often overlooked side of a healthy lifestyle.

Most of us think of dieting and exercising when we think of losing weight or just maintaining good health. But there is a much bigger underlying factor that will help or hinder your efforts.

The foundation of all your health related efforts is happiness and peace of mind.

No it’s not an airy-fairy unattainable thing.

And no it isn’t reserved specially for the more fortunate and richer echelons of society. It’s something that can be had every single day of our lives – if we were ready to work at it, and if we knew HOW to work at it. (more…)

There are three events being held in September to raise money for great causes that I wanted to share with you.

The first is being held this Sunday at the El Paraiso Country Club in aid of Manacare, the charity which is creating a community in Sri Lanka to help over 1,000 people effected by the tsunami. This event is in two parts, a garden party and fun day from 12.00-17.00 and then a gala dinner in the evening. The garden party has a 3€ admission fee and the gala dinner is 50€ per ticket. Call Marion for more information or to reserve your ticket 952 883799.

The second event is also a garden fete, being held on 12th September at 12.00 in Diana Park , to raise money for Adana rescue animals. Stalls vary from home made cakes and pies, organic skin care, minx nails, second hand books, drinks bar and many more. There are still tables available for just 10€ to display your products or promote your company and all the money goes to Adana. Please contact Helen on 628298201 to reserve your table. For more information and directions visit www.nutri-cleanse.com

Finally on 15th September, The Foundation of Friends are holding a ladies’ lunch at Pasta Cafe.  With guest speaker C J Hadlow, owner/editor of Tres Chic Magazine. The lunch will comprise a three course meal, welcome glass of cava, half a bottle of wine and water and coffee. The price of the tickets is 30 Euros of which 10 Euros will go to the charity along with the proceeds of the raffle. Please contact michelle@thefoundationoffriends.org to reserve your tickets.

Please contact Shaw Marketing Services to let us know about your events and remember we can help you with event organising Marbella as well as event marketing.

I am delighted to announce that we are now working with the World’s largest privately owned opticians –  Specsavers.

Shaw Marketing Services is working with them to promote the brand to Spanish consumers via public relations and increase the number of Spanish visiting their stores on the Costa del Sol and the Costa Blanca. They have four stores in Fuengirola, Calpe, Jávea and Torrevieja and want to expand their customer base from predominantly expats to a mix of nationalities.

Specsavers has started a marketing and PR campaign aimed at the Spanish market to promote their brand, draw attention to their existing stores and highlight their amazing offers such as a complete pair of glasses from 25€ and two for one glasses from 75€. We are working alongside Advent Communications to take care of the public relations angle, whilst they produce the advertisements and printed materials. Our first press release introducing Specsavers’ Price Revolution was sent out early in August and we are producing some great articles and news stories to accompany it. I’ll keep you informed of the progress.

Flamenco Marbella

I love Flamenco! For me the drama, noise and fun of it really typifies the Spanish and it’s great to be able to watch it live. There are many tourist places to watch flamenco which will offer you an amazing show, but I prefer the more authentic spit and sawdust places where the Spanish go.

A few weeks ago, we finally got around to visiting Tablao Flamenco Ana Maria which is tucked away in Marbella Old Town in Plaza Santa Cristo and it was fantastic. It’s held in the owner’s front room by the looks of it, with lots of little round tables with polka dot table cloths, a small bar and a wooden floor for the dancers. The night we went there were three female dancers, a fantastic old guy who sang and danced, a singer and three musicians one who also sang. They sit along the back of the dance space and essentially “jam” with the dancers getting up in turn and the musicians playing according to how they dance. It really is a great spectacle and some of the performances were incredible! (more…)

There is a week of free screenings taking place in Plaza Antonio Banderas in Puerto Banus from 23-29 August as an extension of the Marbella Film Festival which takes place in the Autumn.

Each evening starting at 9:30 pm, the festival offers some of the outstanding works from the past festivals, free of charge! The award winning films  scheduled for screening this August are from Spain, UK. U.S.A, Russia, Germany, Italy, Iran, Afghanistan, Argentina, Denmark, Ireland and India. There are short films, animation, documentaries and feature films in the original version with English or Spanish subtitles.

Detailed programs of the titles, subjects and times can be found in the Marbella Tourist Offices in Marbella and Puerto Banus, the Marbella Casino, Hotel H10 Andalucia Plaza and at the stands of Antonio Banderas plaza in Puerto Banus or online at www.marbellafilmfestival.com.

I’d really suggest you take advantage of this if you like culture. We went along to last year’s film festival and there was a great programme of films and entertainment, totally free, but hardly anyone was there! I think this is crazy when it’s such a great event, so this is your second chance to see some of the best bits. I hope you’ll be able to make it.

Here is the full programme:

Choosing the best style for a marketing message can be as important as the message itself.

Imagine this:

At a farm gate a hand lettered sign with pokerwork burnt into rough hewn wood reads: “Farm Fresh Eggs”

In addition to being right for the freshness claim, the rustic signage also feeds premium quality expectations that the eggs will be free range and organic. Without adding words to this deceptively simple sign, the execution of the message creates very positive associations which will attract buyers strongly.

Now imagine the same rough sign reading: “Flying Lessons”

Would you dare take flying lessons from a company that advertised such a high tech service in such a rustic low tech way?

This simple example shows that selling points implied via tone and style are often more readily embraced than overt claims; particularly true in crowded markets where consumers are exposed to many competing sales messages and wonder which to believe.

If you get the style wrong, even the best selling copy will struggle to achieve credibility.

Shaw Marketing Services are experts in Marbella Marketing and can help you develop the right message and portray it correctly in terms of images, tone and style. We can apply this to developing your brand, creating powerful advertising and signage and much more. For more information, please take a look around our website, email info@shawmarketingservices.com or call 0034 951 775 606.

My friend Steve Hall is amazing! He was inspired by Bjorn Heidenstrom’s epic journey to cycle and hitch-hike from Norway to South Africa in to raise funds and awareness of the plight of refugees. But rather than just give a donation he took a month to help with PR and act as a support driver for the Spanish leg. Bjorn was collecting football shirts to make the biggest football shirt in the world to fly at the world cup in South Africa in support of the National Refugee Council and the millions of refugees around the world.

We all thought Steve was pretty amazing being the support driver, but then he went and shocked us all by announcing he’d go and take to two wheels himself and cycle to all the 92 football league grounds in England and Wales. Now Steve isn’t a cyclist or a fitness junkie, but still decided to embark on this huge journey taking 3 months and almost 3,000 miles!

Steve has now been to over 50 clubs and despite a nasty accident he is determined to finish this amazing journey. He’s looking for places to stay, sponsorship of 20 UK pounds a day to allow him to finish the trip and publicity for his journey and the cause.

Well done Steve, I think what you’re doing is amazing!

Find out more at http://theshirt2010.co.uk/ or read a great article about his latest visit to Chesterfield FC. Please spread the word about Steve’s challenge and the plight of the refugees and contact Steve via the website if you can offer any support!

Less time at the pool this year!

Sorry I’ve been a little quiet of late, but I have been snowed under, doing a weekly email campaign for my European Holiday Rental client, working with an event organiser to create their websites, Twitter and advertising campaign, creating a marketing plan for a new investment company and signing a contract with a leading firm of opticians.

I am thrilled to be this busy, but it rather flies in the face of my assumption that nothing ever happens for non-tourist related businesses in the summer. (more…)
