Christmas on the Costa del Sol

There’s a definite chill in the air and the Christmas decorations are going up in shops and on the streets getting ready for December. One thing I really like about Spain is that the Christmas build-up doesn’t start in earnest until the first of December, rather than in October in the UK, so you don’t get sick of it all before the main event!

Christmas here is quite a different affair from the UK, with Christmas Eve dinner being the biggest party, with all the families getting together to eat seafood like oysters, clams and king prawns. Christmas Day itself is quite quiet, but families will hit the paseo if the weather is good to try out new toys, get some air and maybe have a drink or two with friends.

New Year’s Eve is a big party, but people don’t leave the house until just a bit before midnight and tend to go to their nearest square to celebrate with the neighbours. Don’t forget your grapes, as the tradition is to eat a grape for each chime of the clock at midnight!

There’s loads of things to do if you fancy a more traditional British Christmas though, with shops selling all the favourites to create your perfect Christmas at home and lots of restaurants serving up delicious Christmas dinners. You can go to the pantomime, go ice-skating or enjoy relaxed Christmas shopping in one of the many shopping centres, it’s a lovely place to be.
