Georgina recommends … Gorki Marbella

Gorki Marbella is just down the road from where we live and we think it’s a lovely place to have a good glass of wine in a refined wine bar atmosphere. They have an excellent selection of wines at reasonable prices and delicious food as well. This is a chain with other wine bars in Malaga, Seville, Cordoba and Madrid. Interestingly it started life as a deli offering people the option to sample the produce and they still have a deli part of the bar where you can buy some of the things on offer.

Read on for our review of Gorki Marbella.

The location –c/ Pablo Casals, 8. The big Zara on Ricardo Soriano is a good landmark for this place. Head down Avenida de la Fontanilla towards the sea,  which is the road past Zara (away from the centre of town),  and Gorki is on the second road on your right on the left hand side. This area is excellent for authentic Spanish restaurants and bars, so is worth exploring if you don’t know it.

The food – For me, Gorki is more a wine bar than a place to eat and they have a wonderful selection of wines which are very reasonably priced. The house wines are good, but they will also advise you if you explain what kinds of wine you like and you can always try a little if you’re not sure. However, as with any good Spanish bar they do have a lovely selection of food and this stuff is a cut above the rest, showing their deli roots with superb produce. Their jamon serrano is incredible, but expensive!

The service – The service here is lovely, with mature waiters that really take care of you and take pride in the place.

The decor/atmosphere – I had been missing the wine bar vibe that I enjoyed in London and I think Gorki really fills the void well. It feels refined and expensive and is favoured by a wealthy Spanish crowd and their families. It’s chilled out and rarely packed, so it makes for a great place to set the world to rights over some lovely wine and catch up with friends.

The price – For such a refined place, the alcohol is surprisingly good value, especially the wines. However the food is expensive and of course you can push the boat out and order expensive wines and champagne. I tend to enjoy the wine and the olives and not eat in here, but the quality of the produce is exceptional and we had some of the best jamon serrano we have had anywhere in Gorki, but at 18€ for a plate it was a treat!

Contact – Check out the English version of the Gorki website for information about the place and contact details.
